Almost hay most?

“Almost people like music” – câu này người Việt viết rất nhiều vì dịch thẳng “hầu hết mọi người”. Nhưng đây là lỗi kinh điển: almost là trạng từ (gần như), không đứng ngay trước danh từ. Muốn nói “hầu hết” thì dùng most, hoặc almost all. Đây là cặp từ chỉ lượng hay sai trong nhóm từ tiếng Anh dễ dùng sai nghĩa.

“Almost” nghĩa là gì?

Almost là trạng từ, nghĩa là gần như, suýt nữa, chưa hoàn toàn. Vì là trạng từ, almost bổ nghĩa cho từ khác – không đứng thẳng trước danh từ. Almost thường đi với all, every, everyone, everything, always, never, nothing, no, hoặc với động từ, tính từ, con số.

Các cụm từ thường gặp:

• almost all / almost every: gần như tất cả
• almost always / never: gần như luôn luôn / gần như không bao giờ
• almost + động từ: suýt (almost fell, almost forgot)

Ví dụ:

• Almost everyone came to the party. (Gần như ai cũng tới dự tiệc.)

“Most” nghĩa là gì?

Most nghĩa là hầu hết, phần lớn và đứng ngay trước danh từ (không có the): most people, most students. Nếu danh từ đã có the / my / these…, phải dùng most of: most of the students, most of my friends. Ngoài ra the most là so sánh nhất (the most beautiful).

• most of + the / my / them: phần lớn trong số…
• make the most of: tận dụng tối đa

Ba cách đúng để nói “hầu hết mọi người”: most people, almost all people, almost everyone. Almost gần nghĩa với nearly – xem near / nearly. Cặp từ đi với số ít, số nhiều dễ nhầm là other / another.
