“She is one of the best student in my class” – câu khen này rất hay được viết thiếu “s”. Lý do: tiếng Việt nói “một trong những học sinh giỏi nhất”, chữ “một” khiến ta nghĩ danh từ phải ở số ít. Thực ra cấu trúc này luôn cần danh từ số nhiều, và là một lỗi quen thuộc trong nhóm số ít và số nhiều dễ nhầm.

Vì sao “one of the best student” là sai?
“One of” nghĩa là “một trong số”, mà “số” thì phải nhiều hơn một. Nếu danh từ ở số ít (student), câu thành “một trong số một học sinh” – vô nghĩa. Vì vậy ngữ pháp tiếng Anh bắt buộc danh từ sau “one of the” ở số nhiều.
Người Việt sai vì hai lẽ: chữ “một” trong “một trong những” kéo ta về số ít, và tiếng Việt không đánh dấu số nhiều ở danh từ.
